You should really try this.
Understanding how the world works is fundamental to our advancement and survival as a species. It is also fundamental to understanding who we are, what we are, and our place in the universe. Knowledge is valuable even if we don’t yet know how we will use it.
Cost of bailout - at least 900 billion, likely over a trillion.
Cost of Iraq war to date - over 700 billion.
Cost of LHC - 4.6 billion.
The anger you might feel at the cost of this experiment (or the space program, or other costly scientific endeavor) is misplaced. Science always pays off. It is one of the most powerful creative forces in the world.
BUT IS IT WORTH THE WORLD GETTING SUCKED INTO A BLACK HOLE, JOSH? WILL SCIENCE SAVE YOU FROM ETERNAL DAMNATION?
Interesting note: I recall one physicist humorously compared the likely hood of the LHC destroying the world to that of an alien race visiting us and deciding to destroy us because we were silly/boring enough not to fire up such a fantastic machine.
Can we really risk disappointing our potential alien overlords?

The characters in this movie should be arrested for loitering with intent to moan. — The Twilight Saga: New Moon - Roger Ebert
Who is afraid of the terrorists?

I have always kind of disliked the beach. The smell of the salty water, the wind in my face, the gentle roar of the waves all combine to create a sense of terror and discomfort.
I have always really loved the beach because in most cases is the closest you can get to water before you are swimming and being by water makes me feel safe.
